Hon. Solomon Adeola |
The anxiety that came with the general
elections might have subsided but one thing is sure and it is the fact that the
electorates will have cause to either be happy with their choice of representation
or regret it. This will also apply to the people of Lagos-West, the largest
senatorial district in Nigeria in a couple of months’ time if the information
at our disposal is anything to go by.
A source close to the seat of
power in Abuja, revealed that Hon. Solomon Adeola Olamilekan popularly known as
“Yayi”, the current Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Public
Account who will be representing the Lagos West in the senate come from May
29th may have to replace some of his personal effects disposed in the run for
the senatorial election weeks back. The source who revealed that the senator-elect
will not be going out of line if he decided to reacquire new set of properties
in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the one he had, became handy when he
ran out of funds to prosecute his campaign during the last electioneering
campaign.
Yayi, we gathered was jolted by the
postponement of the election for additional six weeks after he had nearly
depleted the N2 billion he allegedly planned to play with for the election. This
we gathered forced him into putting up for sale one of his properties in the
FCT. The house, we can confirmed was put up at a price in the range of N30 to
N45 million, and this, according to sources will be the first priority of the
senator-elect once the red chamber is declared so he would have something to
fall back on in subsequent situation.
The wastefulness and the show of
money to garner votes by Yayi and the opposition during the last electioneering
campaign is public knowledge, though questions should be asked on their source
of money especially when one is currently a public servant serving in the
capacity of the Chairman of the Federal House Committee on Public Account, his
show of wealth and extravagance during the last election was a sign that he
will first work to enrich himself even in the senate. It is noteworthy that he was
accused sometime last year by some residents of Alimosho, the constituency he
currently represents in the national assembly of neglect, when he abandoned
those who voted him into office for ambition in Ogun State.
His ambition in Ogun State was said
to have been shelved when he was allegedly ordered at gun point by political
thugs in the state to leave when his lavish spending was said to have gotten on
the nerves of some prominent politicians in Ogun West. The way he throws around
money has been a source of concern for many who were skeptical of his office in
the House of Representatives. The Public Account Committee oversight functions
has seen him raise issues with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and many other government and private
organizations and individuals, but none of them could really have been said to
have been successfully concluded.
It is alleged that his committee’s
inability to have find any of those tried guilty may not be unconnected with one
form of gratification or the other that they are receiving from them. The case
of the immediate-past governor of CBN, whom the committee accused of wasteful
spending based on the audit of the CBN account by Ernst & Young some years
back, only for the case to be allowed to die after a while, is a typical
example.
