CHALLENGES AND REALITIES OF LEADERSHIP IN NIGERIA: THE ROLE OF TOASTMASTERS

Around the world more than three million men and women of all ages, professions and occupations have benefited from Toastmasters training, and more than one thousand corporations, community groups, universities, associations, and government agencies now use Toastmasters training. Toastmasters International is a non-profit, non-political, non-religious club and one of the leading educational clubs worldwide. The Club provides a mutually supportive environment for its members to develop their skills, with special focus on leadership and communication skills. Toastmasters possess one of the largest organized systems for personal development in the world.

It is therefore time and a rare opportunity to savour the best of Toastmasters in the maiden edition of the Nigerian Toastmasters’ Conference. Toastmasters from a humble beginning in 1924 at the basement of YMCA in Santa Ana, California. Since then, Toastmasters International has grown to become a world leader in helping people become effective leaders and competent communicators. Leading corporate organizations have also benefitted from Toastmasters training programs, which develops leadership skills, hones communication abilities and improves critical thinking capacities of employees. Corporate Toastmasters Clubs have been known to build a highly capable workforce who can respond with quick mental agility, communicate with extraordinary skills, and provide effective feedback.To date, Toastmasters clubs have spread to all the continents of the world. The club’s nearly 313,000 members in 14,650 clubs in 126 countries, offer a proven and enjoyable way to practise and hone communication and leadership skills. The Toastmasters education was officially introduced into Nigeria in 2005 through the pioneering efforts of Ambassador Vincent Sunny Okobi. Presently, Nigeria is home to over twenty-six Toastmasters clubsin various cities of the country.
