South Africa-owned retail store, Shoprite has been cashing in on the lockdown order which took effect in Kwara State a few days ago to extort from residents of Ilorin, Kwara State.
According to an eyewitness, the management and staff of Shoprite located along GRA road, Ilorin denied many of their customers entry into their store on the pretext of controlling the COVID-19 spread. And as if that was not enough, some of the security operatives forced the mammoth crowd who came to buy one or two things to buy face masks at an outrageous price of N300 each. For those willing to buy two pieces, the price was put at N500, because according to them, “we want to be fair and treat every customers equally.”
Trust BethNews learnt the face mask was a precondition to being granted entry into the facility that houses Shoprite stores as residents trooped out in large quantity to buy foodstuffs and stock their houses in preparation for the effect of the lockdown which started at 10pm two days ago. The desperate residents had no other option than to shell out the ludicrous amount of money buy a face mask or two in order to meet the entry requirement to Shoprite Ilorin. Kwara State has just started recording cases of Coronavirus infections whereas other states have had their many weeks back.
Kwara Residents who view Shoprite’s action as exploitative have cried out to the state governor Abdulrahaman to kindly look into this and also take prompt action.
