HOW FG WASTES N1.58B TO PATCH -POTHOLES OF ABUJA-KADUNA ROAD LESS THAN SIX MONTHS

The Federal Government recently spent N1.58 billion on the patching of the 165km Abuja-Kaduna Road, the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has revealed.
The minister was briefing State House reporters on two memo approved yesterday by the Federal Executive Council.
"The two memos were ratification of road works that had to be done under emergency circumstances. The first was the Abuja- Kaduna highway. Recall we had to immediately do palliative works in order to support the closure of the Abuja airport runway which necessitated diversion of traffic to Kaduna.

"At that time, we didn't have FEC's approval; we only had anticipatory presidential approval as prescribed under the law for emergency works.
"N1.58 billion for the 165 km Abuja-Kaduna stretch where we did mainly parching of potholes to make the road motorable during the closure of the Abuja airport," the minister stated.
The minister said the council also approved N4.131 billion for rehabilitation of the Apapa-Wharf Road.
He recalled "that there was a recent presidential order for a 24-hour port operation and that again put pressure on an already deteriorating road. l also went to hand over that road sometime in June under the Public-Private Partnership structure between Messrs Julius Berger, Flour Mills, NPA and Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to start the construction of that first phase of the road."
